5 Overnight Automations Every Solo Dev Should Run (With Copy-Paste Templates)

Running a one-person operation means every hour you spend babysitting servers, checking dashboards, or re-sending the same status pings is an hour you didn't spend building.

I've been running a fully autonomous 24/7 automation stack for months — monitoring, alerting, health checks, revenue tracking — all while I sleep. Here are the 5 automations that gave me the biggest return, with the exact templates I use.

1. The 5-Minute Health Sentinel

A loop that hits every critical endpoint (your API, your store checkout, your docs page) every 5 minutes, records status + latency to a JSONL ledger, and fires an alert only on state change (healthy -> down, or latency > threshold). The state-change filter is the difference between 3 useful pings a week and 3,000 useless ones a day.

2. The Daily Digest Instead of Live Noise

Every morning at a fixed time, one summary message: what was checked, what failed, what was auto-healed, what needs a human. Live alerts are for fires. Digests are for everything else. This single change cut my daily interruption load by ~90%.

3. Self-Healing With an Attempt Budget

When a health check fails, don't just alert — attempt the fix: restart the process, clear the cache, re-auth the session. Cap it at 3 attempts per incident, log every attempt with evidence. Only after the budget is exhausted does it escalate to a human. Most incidents die at attempt 1, and you never even knew they happened.

4. Heartbeat Dead-Man's-Switch

Invert the model: your automation POSTs a heartbeat every 60 seconds to an external watcher. If the watcher misses 3 heartbeats, IT alerts you. This catches the worst failure mode of all — the monitor itself being dead. A monitor that can die silently is not a monitor.

5. Revenue + Traffic Ledger in One Place

Every external signal — sale, payout, email open, link click — gets appended to a single append-only log with a timestamp and channel tag. No dashboards. Just one grep-able ledger of truth. When something works, you can see exactly which channel caused it, and double down the same hour.

The 80/20 of it

If you only implement one: do #3 (self-healing with an attempt budget). It converts the most manual work into zero work.

I've packaged the full template bundle — health sentinel, digest generator, self-healing loop, heartbeat switch, revenue ledger, plus a 30-minute setup guide — as the Automation Starter Pack:

If you want the whole collection of operational kits (monitoring, ops field cards, runbooks), the Ops Mega Bundle has everything at a better price:
