Most small teams don't have an operations problem. They have a visibility problem dressed up as one.
Status meetings exist because nobody trusts that the quiet things are working. So humans meet, read slides, and re-learn what a dashboard should have told them.
The fix: a Monday Unplug Drill
Once a week, before anyone opens Slack, do this:
- Unplug one non-critical dependency (pause one cron, one integration, one automation).
- Watch for 10 minutes. Does anything alert? Does anyone notice? Does the customer-facing path break?
- Restore it. Write one line: what broke, what didn't, what you now know.
That's it. Fifteen minutes. It converts "I think our pipeline is fine" into "I watched our pipeline fail and knew exactly what it touched."
Why it works
- Failures you've seen are inventory, not threats. The drill manufactures small, safe failures so the big ones lose their ambush advantage.
- It kills meetings by producing evidence. One drill log replaces ten minutes of "any updates?" per system.
- It finds silent rot. The paused integration nobody notices for 3 weeks is the one that takes down quarter-end.
Make it a habit, not a hero move
The teams that survive year two aren't the ones with the best runbooks — they're the ones who practiced breaking.
We packaged the full drill (checklist, log template, escalation ladder) into a free starter kit:
→ Free Ops Starter Kit: hive80lab.gumroad.com/l/ops-starter-kit
And if you want the deeper playbook — dashboards that measure money instead of vanity, drills for paid systems, the 1-page revenue review — it's here:
→ Ops Starter Kit Pro ($14, launch coupon HIVE-LAUNCH30): hive80lab.gumroad.com
Run the drill next Monday. Reply with what fell over — I read every one.
