Softlock Isn't Burnout — And It Isn't Laziness Either

A softlock is not a crash. The app is still responsive. The calendar still fills. Replies still get half-written. Progress just… doesn't.

That pattern gets misnamed a lot. People reach for burnout when they mean "I can't start," or laziness when they mean "I start everything and finish nothing." Softlock is a lighter label for the stuck state — systems online, main quest frozen — without forcing a clinical or moral diagnosis.

Softlock (by igotoschoolbybus) is a free, no-signup life softlock quiz. It maps recurring stuck patterns into 16 named types and a shareable card. Entertainment taxonomy only — not therapy, not career counseling, not clinical advice.

Why the distinction helps

  • Burnout language can be too heavy for a Tuesday afternoon stall
  • "Lazy" is usually wrong (and unhelpful)
  • A named type (BUFFERING, INFINITE TUTORIAL, TAB HOARDER, SIDEQUEST…) turns the joke into a next-step question: what's one unlockable move?

You can still be burned out and softlocked. Softlock just gives you a playful diagnostic layer first — especially useful when you want to talk about it with a friend without making it a crisis meeting.

Try it (~60–90 seconds)
