AWS re/Start – My Week 1 Experience

LinkedIn isn’t so bad once you're able to block out the noise and stay focused on what you’re looking for. Ever since I began my DevOps/cloud journey, I’ve had my eyes on the AWS re/Start program. Learning on my own has been tough (and honestly, I don’t like it). So, you can imagine my excitement when I opened my inbox and saw an email from them, confirming that I was finally in!

finally

Before I dive into what my day-to-day looks like in the AWS re/Start program, let me tell you why you should join:

  • Hands-on, practical training in cloud skills.
  • Expert mentorship to guide you every step of the way.
  • A supportive community that keeps you motivated.
  • Real-world projects to build confidence and experience.
  • A clear, structured path into a tech career without feeling lost.

Now that you’ve got the picture, let’s dive into what my day-to-day in the program looks like.

AWS re/Start Cohort 5 Journey – Week 1 Recap

The AWS re/Start program for Cohort 5 commenced on August 11 with our onboarding session, held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We were warmly welcomed by Mr. Olajide Bolade, who walked us through the rules and regulations. It was exciting to learn that most participants were from other countries, which even sparked talk of opening a branch in Ghana. I loved the inclusiveness.

Day 1:

The real learning began the next day. We introduced ourselves and got to know our facilitator better. The day included a personal survey to assess our strengths and weaknesses, helping us understand how to navigate our careers. We also got a small taste of cloud computing and explored AWS services like DeepLens and Rekognition for machine learning.

Day 2:

We covered basic computer concepts such as servers, hardware components, and software, then took a high-level look at cloud computing. We learned about different cloud models and deployment methods and focused on AWS cloud services.

Day 3:

We wrapped up the cloud computing course and moved into professional (soft) skills. We explored different cloud roles, discussed which ones fit us best, and covered time management, budgeting, and goal setting.

Day 4:

We dove deeper into the benefits of cloud services, with a closer look at AWS. In the soft skills session, we learned how to present effectively and use the STAR method for clear communication. We also discussed phone call etiquette and best practices for both in-person and online meetings—an unexpectedly eye-opening session.

Summary

One thing I truly appreciate is how much we support each other! It’s only been a week, but the journey already feels exciting and full of growth.

I’ll be sharing my AWS re/Start journey here, the projects I build along the way. Come say hi on Twitter and LinkedIn, or check out my work on GitHub.
