Getting back to the time in 2021, We developed an application that helps in enhancing the e-learning experience using facial emotion recognition, this project was ranked as one of the top 10 projects globally in 2021 Google Solution Challenge Competition , to cut it off in this article I'm not going to present how we developed it technically, instead I will talk about the importance of features that most of the e-learning platforms don't care about until these days.
First let's dive into the problem
Distance Learning is becoming more popular, and the Covid-19 circumstances just made the transformation process faster.
but with this number of learners, there is still a problem with how to retain student motivation in virtual classrooms, how to provide face-to-face communication experience like in traditional classrooms, and how to effectively test student progress with the lowest percentage of cheating possible.
Why I'm classifying this as an important problem that educational companies need to care about !!
Students' engagement and emotions play a vital role in their academic progress. Positive emotions, like happiness, enhance their efforts and improve the learning experience. while negative emotions, such as anger, can reduce performance and confidence. Understanding and addressing students' emotions is crucial for optimizing their learning outcomes.
In a face-to-face class, instructors can easily monitor students and decide the best way to interact with them and get their full attention by analyzing their reactions and emotions and measuring their progress in understanding a specific topic.
But this becomes more difficult when we talk about e-learning, particularly with a large number of students, especially when there is a negative expression or when determining the level of awareness of a subject. That is why the facial expressions of students in the simulated class, must be taken into consideration.
The most profound words will remain unread unless you can keep the learner engaged, and in e-learning, you can’t watch and monitor each student’s emotion and know if they got it or not.
Managing student progress effectively is also a challenge nowadays, so if there’s a tool that can use the power of AI to ensure there’s no cheating during an online exam it would benefit the instructor a lot in taking the right decision for the student, thus effective online learning occurs
Do you agree with me that capturing student emotions during learning process is critical to a successful learning process ?
How did we tried to solve the problem ?
Our approach focuses on making the virtual classroom more beneficial by offering the most efficient way for instructors to track students' progress and thereby make the course more effective, this would happen by:
- Track students' facial emotions during the meeting and warn the instructor during the meeting whether any student experiences fear, or is unfocused through a user-friendly interface.
- Extracting a report to the instructor after each meeting that demonstrates the degree of interaction of the class of each participant and also for the whole class.
- Track students during monitored exams and track if someone tries to cheat will warn the instructor to get attention for this student. 2-Minutes Demo Video
Final Thoughts:
Educational platforms must recognize the significance of capturing student emotions in online classes and strive to simulate the face-to-face learning experience as closely as possible. Emotions play a vital role in student engagement, motivation, and academic progress. By understanding and addressing students' emotions, educational platforms can optimize their learning outcomes and create a more effective and enjoyable learning environment.
By using the power of AI we can track students facial expressions during online classes, thus instructors can gain valuable insights into their level of focus, and emotional state. This information can help instructors adapt their teaching strategies, provide timely support to struggling students, and improve engagement in virtual classrooms.
By prioritizing student emotions and implementing tools that simulate face-to-face interactions, educational platforms can bridge the gap between physical and virtual classrooms. I would love to know if you agree that capturing student emotions and simulating face-to-face interactions are critical for a successful online learning experience? I would love to hear your feedback and insights on this topic. Please share your thoughts with me.
