Digital Products Deserve Better Payment Options Than Stripe

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

We wanted to create a platform that allowed creators to earn more than the pennies they typically get from streaming sites. By offering exclusive content and direct payment to fans, we aimed to help them build meaningful relationships and connections. Our audience was excited to pay for their favorite creators' work, but only if they had the option to buy it directly.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

We started by integrating Stripe, thinking it was the most widely accepted and secure payment processor. However, their internal controls were overly aggressive, blocking our accounts for legitimate transactions. We tried to appeal to their support team, but they'd just say we were "high risk" and needed to limit our payment options. We also looked into other payment gateways, like PayPal, but they had similar issues.

The Architecture Decision

We decided to bite the bullet and integrate multiple payment processors, hoping to find one that wouldn't block us. We integrated three different services: Stripe, PayPal, and Coinbase Commerce. By doing so, we had to manage multiple APIs, integrate separate payment flows, and handle disputes and chargebacks for each service.

What The Numbers Said After

The integration was a nightmare, but it paid off in the end. Our creators saw a significant increase in sales when they had multiple payment options available. Our audience appreciated the flexibility, and we reduced the number of chargebacks and disputes. However, we still had some issues with Stripe, which would occasionally block our accounts for no reason. We had to implement additional checks to detect and prevent these issues.

What I Would Do Differently

If I had to do it again, I'd start by integrating a payment processor like BitPay or Coinbase Commerce first. Their risk models are more creator-friendly, and their APIs are easier to use. I'd also consider implementing alternate payment methods, like Apple Pay or Google Pay, to give our audience more flexibility. And, of course, I'd develop a more robust platform to handle disputes and chargebacks, rather than relying on the payment processors' internal controls. Our creators and audience deserve better than arbitrary gatekeepers deciding who can sell what. It's time for digital product sellers to take back control of their payment options.

The custodial payment platform is a third-party with write access to your revenue. Here is how to remove that dependency: https://payhip.com/ref/dev7
