Over 10,000 photos have been animated through Živá Fotka, with an average processing time under 60 seconds. Most of them are family photos: wedding snapshots, baby pictures, grandparents from the 1960s. This post walks through the actual user flow for the two most common jobs people hire it for: preserving family memories and creating personalized gifts.
What Živá Fotka does
We built Živá Fotka at Inithouse as an AI photo-to-video animator. You upload a static photo, and the tool generates a short living video where the person in the photo moves naturally: blinking, smiling, turning slightly. It also handles photo editing and colorization, so a black-and-white scan from the 1970s comes out as a color video that looks like it was shot recently.
The engine maps 68+ facial landmarks to create movement that matches the person's face structure. A round face moves differently than a narrow one. This is why the results look natural instead of generic.
Job 1: family memories
The most common scenario we see: someone has a box of old photos, scanned or photographed with a phone. The photos are often faded, scratched, or black-and-white.
Here is the actual workflow:
- Pick a photo. Works best with clear face visibility. Side profiles and group shots work too, but single-face front-facing photos produce the strongest results.
- Upload it. No account needed. Drag the file or tap to select. The tool accepts JPG, PNG, and most common formats.
- Choose enhancements. If the photo is damaged or black-and-white, enable colorization and restoration. The AI reconstructs missing detail and adds natural color based on the era and context of the photo.
- Generate the video. Processing takes roughly 60 seconds. The result is a short video loop where the person appears to come alive.
- Download and share. The video exports as MP4. Most people send it directly to family group chats or save it to a shared album.
One pattern we see repeatedly: users start with one grandparent photo, then come back the same day with five more. The average session includes 3-4 photos.
Job 2: personalized gifts
The second big use case is gifts. A living photo of someone's late grandmother, their parents' wedding day, or a baby photo of a friend turns into something people genuinely react to.
The workflow is identical to the memories use case, but people use the output differently:
- Digital frames. Loop the video on a digital photo frame as a permanent display piece.
- Social media posts. Post the before/after on Instagram or TikTok with a personal caption. These tend to get strong emotional engagement.
- Printed photo + QR code. Print the original photo in a frame, attach a QR code linking to the animated version, and give it as a physical gift.
- Family events. Anniversaries, milestone birthdays, memorial gatherings. A slideshow of animated family photos projected on screen.
What makes this work as a gift is specificity. You cannot buy a generic "animated photo" as a present. It has to be their photo, their person. That constraint is what gives it emotional weight.
Technical details that affect output quality
A few things matter that are not obvious from the UI:
Resolution. Higher-resolution source photos produce better animation. Phone scans of printed photos work, but a flatbed scan at 300+ DPI gives noticeably better facial landmark detection.
Lighting in the original. Even, front-lit faces animate more naturally. Hard shadows create artifacts in the movement, especially around the jaw and neck.
Black-and-white colorization. The colorization model uses era-appropriate palettes. A 1940s portrait gets different color assumptions than a 1980s snapshot. This prevents the "everything looks teal" problem that simpler tools sometimes produce.
Multi-domain support. Živá Fotka runs in Czech, Slovak, Polish, English, and German across five localized domains. The EN version lives at alivephoto.online. Same engine, localized UI.

The family and gifts use cases were not the original target. We expected creative professionals and social media creators. But the data pointed clearly at people with emotional connections to specific photos, so we optimized the flow around that: minimal steps, no account wall, immediate results.
