Introduction
My name is James Ndung'u Kabuga.
I’ve decided to start documenting my tech journey to keep myself accountable, but also because I know there are many students out there who are in a similar path. Maybe my story will encourage you, or it’ll remind you that journeys in tech are not straight.
Discovering Tech After High School
After finishing high school, I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to join a boot-camp. The bootcamp introduced us to different areas of tech:
- Web development
- Data science
- Cyber security
The goal was for us to explore and discover where our passions were.
During this time, I got really interested in data science. My boot-camp project was a disease prediction model — and working on it made me realize how technology can be in solving real-world problems.
A Change of Plans
My initial plan was to pursue a degree in Data Science at a private university. But due to financial constraints, that wasn’t possible.
Instead, I enrolled at a public university to study Software Engineering. Today, I’m in my second year of the degree program. At first, it felt like a reverse gear, but I’ve since realized it’s actually a blessing — combining software engineering and data science opens more doors than either path alone.
Where I Am Today
I’m currently doing a refresher in Python (my mentor suggested a 4-week focus to sharpen the basics again).
I also created a GitHub repo where I’ll be posting my lessons learned as I go.
At the same time, I’m committing to consistent documentation — sharing not just what I build, but also:
- What I learned
- Resources I used
- Challenges I faced
- How I solved them
Looking Ahead
My focus right now is:
Building passion-driven projects.
Blending software engineering and data science skills.
Sharing my journey across platforms (GitHub, blogs, Discord, etc.).
This is just the beginning. I’ll be tracking my progress, and in December, I plan to look back and see how far I’ve come.
Honestly tech journeys are not always straight foward. What really matters is consistency being curious and the desire to keep going even during the bad days.
If you are a student in tech I would love to hear your story, Feel free to connect with me.
