Changelog: Onboarding New Community Members

We've been wanting to create a more welcoming experience for new community members and make sure everyone is aware of some key dev.to features. For example, not everyone knows that following a tag actually customizes their dev.to home feed with more relevant content. This is particularly useful for surfacing more niche programming topics directly onto your feed.

We'll continuously improve new member onboarding as the site evolves, but here's what the first iteration looks like:

1. Quick Overview
welcome slide

2. Shows popular tags
follow tags slide

3. Encourages new members to get involved
get involved slide

Next up: including a slide that lets people follow their twitter friends and/or popular dev.to writers from the topics they care about.

Sweet!

It's been a while since I signed up. Is there like a beginner checklist for new sign ups to complete, maybe with a progress bar? Like

  • [ ] Write your first post
  • [ ] React to a post
  • [x] Comment on a post

[||||||||||------------------------] 33% Complete!

I've used other apps (Evernote maybe?) that do that, and I've always liked that level of hand-holding when using a new app.

Awesome, thanks for the note. I'm never sure if people love or hate those things. It's something we'll probably do eventually but we still need to wrap our heads around what would work best for our system :)

Great! It's always useful to have that kind of welcome, you can save a lot of investigation time :)
