Electronic Materials Office has announced Altar II, a 75% keyboard centered on an unusually thin design, a proprietary switch mechanism, and a detachable haptic control called the M-Dial.
This is not a hands-on review. KeyboardTester.click did not receive, type on, measure, hear, charge, or benchmark an Altar II. The product remains in active development, and the only typing sample identified during research came from the manufacturer using pre-production hardware.
What EMO has announced
EMO lists a 299 × 116.5 × 4.75 mm chassis, a 75% layout with function row and arrow keys, and a custom dual-steel-arm scissor-mechanical switch system. The published switch figures are 40 gf force and 1.8 mm total travel.
The company also lists two Bluetooth 5 LE channels plus USB-C, ZMK/Zephyr firmware, a detachable M-Dial, haptic feedback, speaker, red NiteLite illumination, and a macOS companion app called Sanctuary.
Those are manufacturer specifications and product descriptions—not independent production measurements. Weight, battery capacity, key count, final layout variants, raw polling and scan rates, rollover, switch lifetime, hot-swap status, repairability, certification, warranty handling for Kickstarter rewards, and final shipping costs remain unconfirmed.
The $1 reservation is not a keyboard purchase
EMO says a refundable $1 reservation unlocks a $249 Kickstarter pledge tier. The dollar is not deducted from the keyboard price and is not a deposit or purchase.
The announced pricing ladder is:
- $249 for the reservation tier;
- $279 during the first 48 hours;
- $299 later in the campaign; and
- $349 as an intended retail price.
The Kickstarter is scheduled for November 10, 2026. Early-summer-2027 delivery is an estimate, not a guaranteed retail date. Separate regional currency, campaign shipping charges, taxes or duties, layouts, and normal retail availability were not confirmed for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia when checked on August 9.
Mechanical, scissor, or both?
The most precise neutral description is a proprietary scissor-mechanical system. EMO calls the design fully mechanical, but its own specification describes dual steel scissor arms and a retention spring. That terminology does not establish compatibility with MX or Kailh Choc switches, and it is not evidence of a conventional hot-swappable design.
The claimed 4.75 mm thickness, two-minute charging behavior, battery estimates, feel, acoustics, durability, and world-thinnest positioning all need independent testing on production hardware.
Five browser checks if it ships
Test the factory state first, then repeat the same sequence over USB-C, Bluetooth channel one, Bluetooth channel two, and after each remap:
- Use the Keyboard Tester to check every normal browser-visible key.
- Try the combinations you actually use in the Keyboard Ghosting Test and N-Key Rollover Test.
- Look for duplicate events with the Keyboard Double-Click Test.
- Record different keyboard zones with the Keyboard Sound Test under the same microphone setup.
- Compare browser-visible repeat timing with the Keyboard Polling Rate Test.
These checks can expose missing, phantom, duplicate, or logically stuck browser events and transport-to-transport inconsistency. They cannot verify chassis thickness, physical force or travel, raw USB/Bluetooth polling, scan rate, wireless latency, battery life, charging speed, haptic accuracy, durability, or production quality.
