Ontario Tech University Expands Academic Horizons with New Gaming and AI Specializations

Higher education is catching up to where the economy already is. Ontario Tech University is introducing two major new academic tracks for 2026-2027 — and both sit at the intersection of technology, society, and tomorrow's job market.

Overview

Ontario Tech University is strategically expanding its Communication and Digital Media Studies (CDMS) program with significant modifications slated for the 2026-2027 academic year. These enhancements aim to deepen interdisciplinary engagement and cater to the evolving landscape of digital media and its societal impact.

Specialization #1: Video Games, Creative Industries & Society

A cornerstone of these changes is the proposed introduction of a new Specialized Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Video Games, Creative Industries and Society. This program was developed collaboratively between the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) and the Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT)'s Game Development and Interactive Media (GDIM) program.

This interdisciplinary track represents a significant step towards recognizing the cultural and economic importance of the gaming industry. The specialization will equip students with:

  • Comprehensive understanding of game development processes
  • Deep knowledge of industry dynamics
  • Critical analysis of the societal implications of interactive media
  • Connections to global creative and entertainment industries

This isn't just about making games — it's about understanding games as a cultural, social, and economic phenomenon that shapes modern life.

Specialization #2: AI for Professional Communicators

Complementing the gaming specialization, Ontario Tech is also introducing an AI for Professional Communicators specialization. This initiative acknowledges the pervasive influence of artificial intelligence in modern communication practices.

Students in this track will gain insights into:

  • Leveraging AI tools for effective messaging and content creation
  • Strategic communication in various professional contexts
  • Preparing for a future where AI is an integral part of the communication workflow

Additional Program Enhancements

Beyond the two major new specializations, the CDMS program is undergoing several beneficial adjustments:

  • Graduate seminar access: High-achieving 4th-year students can fulfill program requirements by taking graduate seminars within the Master of Arts in Social Practice and Innovation (MSPI), offering a pathway to advanced study
  • Streamlined electives: Updated notation for general electives to improve academic calendar clarity
  • New elective options: COMM 3751U added to the list of available electives for the major

The Broader CDMS Program

The Communication and Digital Media Studies program spans multiple pathways: a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours program, specialized BA options in Creativity, Digital Arts & Entertainment Industries and Strategic Communication, Social Media & Society, and an advanced entry program.

The program also supports a wide array of minors, making its expertise accessible across the university and enriching the academic experience for students from diverse faculties. The curriculum:

  • Delves into the global creative and entertainment industries
  • Explores emerging internet and social media trends
  • Examines how technologies intersect with societal and cultural dynamics
  • Develops critical media literacies
  • Applies strategies for social justice and informed civic engagement

Why This Matters

Institutions like Ontario Tech integrating gaming studies and AI communication into formal academic programs signals a broader shift: these are serious, growing fields that deserve serious academic infrastructure. For students, this represents new pathways to careers at the intersection of creativity, technology, and social impact.
