I wrote 66 community answers so you can see which freelance problems actually get engagement

I spent the last few weeks writing answers to freelance questions across Quora, forums, and communities.

Not for fun. To find out which problems UK freelancers actually care about enough to ask about publicly.

Here's what came up over and over.


The problems freelancers actually talk about

1. Getting paid late (or not at all)

This is the number one topic. By a distance. Questions like:

  • "My client hasn't paid in 60 days, what can I do?"
  • "Can I charge interest on late invoices?"
  • "How do I chase a client without losing the relationship?"

Freelancers know this is a problem. Most don't know there's actual law behind it — the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act 1998 lets you charge 8% + Bank of England base rate automatically. You don't need to negotiate it. It's your legal right.

2. Self-assessment stress

Every January and every April, the same panic. "What can I claim?" "How do I do this without an accountant?" "I've got 5 years of unfiled returns."

The HMRC guidance is genuinely bad. It assumes you already know what you're doing.

3. Contracts (or lack of them)

Loads of freelancers are working on a handshake. Or a WhatsApp thread. Or a vague email chain.

Then the client ghosts them, disputes the work, or just refuses to pay — and there's nothing in writing.

4. Raising rates

"I've been charging the same day rate for 3 years. How do I raise it without losing clients?"

This one comes up constantly. Most freelancers undercharge because they're scared of the conversation.

5. Going from employed to self-employed

A lot of people are transitioning. They don't know what they need to do, what records to keep, what they can claim, or how tax actually works now they're paying it themselves.


What this tells me

Freelancers aren't looking for inspiration. They're looking for answers to specific, painful problems.

The best content (and the best tools) are the ones that solve exactly that — no fluff, no 4000-word preamble, just "here's the answer."
