How to Put a Render or Railway App on a Custom Domain With HTTPS

You shipped your app on Render or Railway. It works. The URL looks like this:

my-app-x4k2.onrender.com
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

or this:

my-app-production-a1b2.up.railway.app
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Those are platform URLs, not product URLs. They tell anyone who sees them that this is a deployment, not a finished product.

Here is how to fix that.

The standard approach: DNS configuration

Both Render and Railway support custom domains through their dashboards. The process is similar on both platforms:

On Render:

  1. Go to your service's Settings → Custom Domains
  2. Add your domain (e.g., myapp.com)
  3. Render gives you a CNAME target — something like my-app-x4k2.onrender.com
  4. Go to your domain registrar and add a CNAME record pointing to that target
  5. Wait for DNS propagation (minutes to hours)
  6. Render automatically provisions a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate

On Railway:

  1. Go to your service's Settings → Domains → Custom Domain
  2. Add your domain
  3. Railway gives you a CNAME or A record to configure
  4. Add the record at your registrar
  5. Wait for propagation
  6. SSL is automatically provisioned

Both platforms handle SSL automatically once DNS resolves. The certificate renews on its own. You do not need to think about it after setup.

But there are friction points:

  • You need a domain first. For a side project, $10-15/year might not feel worth it yet.
  • DNS configuration is confusing for beginners. CNAME vs A record, TTL values, propagation — it is a lot of terminology for someone who just wants a clean URL.
  • Propagation is unpredictable. You make the DNS change and then wait. Sometimes it is instant. Sometimes you are refreshing for an hour.
  • Debugging DNS issues is painful. If something goes wrong, the error messages from SSL provisioning are rarely helpful. "DNS not resolving" could mean you made a typo, your registrar is slow, or your record type is wrong.

The fast approach: skip DNS entirely

If you want a clean URL without buying a domain or configuring DNS records, DomainDock handles the entire routing and SSL process.

Step 1: Pick a subdomain on digitalweb.host — something like myapp.digitalweb.host.

Step 2: Enter your Render or Railway deployment URL as the target.

Step 3: Done. Your app is live at myapp.digitalweb.host with automatic HTTPS.

No registrar. No DNS records. No propagation wait. No certificate provisioning.

Your URL goes from:

my-app-x4k2.onrender.com
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

to:

myapp.digitalweb.host
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That second URL is something you can put on a portfolio, share in a job application, or drop in a README without explaining what Render is.

Bringing your own domain

If you already own a domain, you can use DomainDock for zero-config HTTPS routing instead of configuring DNS at your registrar. Point your domain to DomainDock, and it routes traffic to your Render or Railway deployment with automatic SSL.

This works with any deployment that has an HTTPS endpoint — Render, Railway, Fly.io, or anything else. You get one consistent routing layer instead of configuring DNS differently for each platform.

When to use which approach

Configure DNS at your registrar when:

  • You want full control over your DNS records
  • You are comfortable with DNS configuration
  • You are only using one hosting platform
  • This is a production application that needs fine-grained DNS control

Use a managed routing tool when:

  • You want a clean URL without buying a domain
  • You deploy across multiple platforms (Render for one project, Railway for another)
  • You want consistent HTTPS routing without platform-specific DNS setup
  • You need it working in seconds, not hours
  • You do not want to debug DNS propagation issues

The bottom line

Your Render or Railway app works. The code is solid. The deployment is stable. The only thing holding it back is a URL that looks like a CI artifact.

Whether you configure DNS yourself or use a tool that handles routing automatically, giving your app a real URL is the fastest way to make it look finished — because it is.

DomainDock routes any deployment to a clean URL with automatic HTTPS — Render, Railway, Vercel, Fly, or any HTTPS endpoint. Free subdomains on digitalweb.host, or bring your own domain. Set up your custom domain in under 30 seconds.
