Last month I stared at my blog's analytics and had an uncomfortable realization: I was publishing content at random times, on random days, with zero strategy beyond "write it when I feel like it."
30 days later: consistent schedule → +43% weekly views, 0 manual effort. Here's exactly how.
So I built a system. A content calendar that schedules, tracks, and self-adjusts — and I let it run for 30 days to see what actually works.
Here's the full breakdown with code, data, and the mistakes that cost me traffic.
The Problem: "Post When Ready" Is a Trap
Most developer blogs (mine included) follow the same anti-pattern:
- Write something when inspiration strikes
- Hit publish immediately
- Wonder why traffic is inconsistent
- Repeat
I tracked my publishing pattern before the calendar system:

See the problem? Week 3 looked great — 6 posts, highest views. But Week 4 I burned out and posted once. The average across all four weeks was only 105 daily views. Consistency beat volume every time, and I had neither.
The Architecture: Dead Simple on Purpose
I deliberately avoided over-engineering this. No databases, no fancy frameworks, no SaaS subscriptions. Just files and cron.

The Calendar Config
Everything starts with a YAML file. No GUI, no drag-and-drop calendar app. Just a config I can version control:

The key insight: series rotation. Instead of randomly picking what to write about, each slot cycles through series. Monday morning Dev.to is always "Blog Ops", Tuesday is "The Lazy Developer", and so on. This keeps every series moving forward consistently.
The Scheduler
Here's the core scheduler. It reads the calendar, figures out what needs publishing, and manages the queue:

The Metrics Collector: Because Gut Feeling Isn't Data
Publishing consistently is only half the battle. You need to know what's working. Here's the script that collects metrics:

30 Days of Data: What I Actually Learned
Here's where it gets interesting. After running this system for 30 days, I have real numbers.
Finding #1: Tuesday and Thursday Mornings Win
I tracked views-per-post by day of the week and time:

Tuesday and Thursday mornings consistently pulled 30-40% more views than other days. My theory: developers are past Monday chaos but haven't checked out for the weekend yet.
Evening posts across the board underperformed morning posts by about 30%. That surprised me — I assumed evening posts would catch the US morning crowd (13+ hours ahead of Korea). Turns out, Dev.to's algorithm favors posts published during "peak creation hours" regardless of timezone.
Finding #2: Series Posts Get 2.3x More Engagement
This was the biggest surprise:
Standalone posts: avg 94 views, 4.2 reactions
Series posts: avg 216 views, 9.7 reactions

Difference: +130% views, +131% reactions
Series posts in "Blog Ops" performed best because readers came back for the next installment. Dev.to's series feature creates a natural navigation path that standalone posts lack.
Finding #3: The "Consistency Compound" Effect
Here's the chart that convinced me this system was worth building:

Week 3: ████████████░░░░ 80% consistency, 178 avg views
Week 4: █████████████░░░ 87% consistency, 203 avg views
Consistency scores above 75% correlated with significantly higher average views. The algorithm (and readers) reward predictable publishing.
Finding #4: Word Count Sweet Spot Is 1800-2200
I tested this deliberately across 30 posts:
Under 1500 words: avg 76 views (felt rushed, low value)
1500-1800 words: avg 118 views (decent but thin)
1800-2200 words: avg 189 views ← sweet spot
2200-3000 words: avg 164 views (good but lower completion)
Over 3000 words: avg 121 views (too long, people bounce)
The sweet spot is 1800-2200 words. Enough depth to be valuable, short enough that people actually finish reading.
The Self-Adjusting Part
Here's what makes this more than a static calendar. The scheduler adjusts based on metrics:

After 30 days, the adaptive scheduler told me to shift one evening slot to morning and increase "Blog Ops" frequency. I did, and week 4 was my best week.
The Mistake That Cost Me 400 Views
Week 2, I got overconfident and published 4 posts on a single Tuesday. The result? Each post cannibalized the others. My total views that day were actually lower than a normal 2-post Tuesday.
The fix was adding the max_posts_per_day and min_gap_hours constraints. Spacing posts at least 4 hours apart ensures each one gets its own window of visibility in Dev.to's feed.

The self-adjusting part is what most content systems miss. Everyone builds the "schedule and forget" piece but nobody closes the feedback loop — which posts actually drove traffic vs. which ones just got vanity likes?
Did you find that the system converged on certain content types or posting times after 30 days, or was it more random than expected?
The ideation bottleneck is real though. Even with a perfect calendar, you still need to fill it with ideas that aren't recycled garbage. I've been using postammo.com to solve that part — it generates viral content hooks and angles so you're not starting from zero every time you sit down to write. Pairs well with an automated calendar like yours since the ideas feed directly into the schedule.
"Series Posts Get 2.3x More Engagement" - This is kind of obvious, given the prominent way that dev.to is showing the series posts. Obviously, it's always nice to have the numbers to prove it.
