There is a version of this problem everywhere.
You want to know what your lease says about subletting. You want to check when your car warranty expires. You have a medical bill and want to know if your insurance policy covers it.
The obvious solution is to dump the PDF into ChatGPT and ask. And that works. Until you think about what just happened.
You uploaded your lease. Your insurance policy. Your medical records. To a server you do not control, run by a company you are trusting not to train on it, store it, or expose it in some future breach.
I am not saying they will. I am saying the data left your device.
The local alternative
The alternative is on-device RAG. You load the document locally, chunk it, embed it, run similarity search against your question, feed the matched chunks to a local model. No uploads.
This works well on a laptop. The problem is it is a developer workflow. You need Python, an embedding model, and a vector similarity library. Your lease does not know that is what you need to ask it a question.
What Goffer does
Goffer is an Android app. It reads documents stored on your phone - PDFs, images, anything you would normally drop into ChatGPT. You type a question. It answers from the document text, quoting the relevant section back to you. The document never leaves your device.
No server call. No account required to use the core feature. No upload step.
Is it slower than cloud AI? Slightly. Does it give you the exact paragraph from your lease rather than a paraphrased summary? Also yes. That difference matters more than you would expect when the document is a legal contract.
When this actually matters
Not every use case needs local processing. If you are summarizing a public article, upload it anywhere. But these categories are different:
- Lease agreements and rental contracts
- Insurance policies (health, home, auto)
- Medical records and bills
- Tax documents
- Employment contracts
These are documents where the specific wording matters and where you probably do not want a copy sitting on someone else's server.
