A password can contain uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols and still be surprisingly predictable.

That's why simply looking at a password isn't enough.

When building or testing an authentication system, it's useful to understand what actually makes a password difficult to guess.

What makes a password stronger?

Several factors matter:

Length — Longer passwords generally provide a larger search space.
Character variety — Using different character types increases the possible combinations.
Entropy — Gives an indication of how unpredictable the password is.
Common patterns — Predictable sequences and patterns can make passwords easier to guess.
Dictionary words — Common words can reduce password strength.
Estimated crack time — Gives a practical way to understand the result.

For example, a password such as:

"Password123!"

may look reasonably complicated at first glance.

But it follows a very common pattern.

Adding a number and a symbol doesn't automatically make a password unpredictable.
