Most people edit by rereading. Rereading catches typos. It does not catch why the page isn't working.
I edit prose for other people, in English and French. I only ever run five passes, one problem each, in this order. I don't mix them, because each pass is blind to the others.
1. The claim pass. Read only the first sentence of every paragraph. If those sentences don't form an argument on their own, the structure is broken, not the prose. Fix the order before you touch a single word. Line editing a page with a crooked spine is wasted work.
2. The cut pass. Delete the first and last paragraph of every section. Most drafts open with a warm-up and close by repeating what you just said. Both are the writer clearing their throat. If the piece still stands without them, they were never load-bearing.
3. The actor pass. Every sentence should have someone doing something. "It was decided that..." hides who decided. "Mistakes were made" hides who made them. Put the actor at the front. This one pass fixes most corporate writing on its own.
4. The concrete pass. Underline every abstract noun. If you can't point at the thing, replace it or delete it. "We improved performance" is nothing. "The page went from 4.1 seconds to 900 milliseconds" is something a reader can check. Specific beats vivid, and both beat vague.
5. The read-aloud pass. Only now. Read the whole thing out loud. Every place you stumble is a place a reader will stumble, and the fix is almost always fewer words, not different ones.
The order matters. Almost everyone runs pass 5 first, then wonders why the piece is clean and still boring.
One thing I've learned editing other people's work: the writer usually knows which paragraph is weak. They can feel it. What they can't do is cut it, because they wrote it and it cost something. That's the whole job. Not having better taste than them. Just being willing to cut what they already suspect.
