Stop Overthinking Marketing: 10 AI Prompts That Actually Work for Small Business

Most small business owners know they should be using AI for marketing. But they open ChatGPT, stare at the blank prompt box, and type something like:

"Write me a marketing plan"

Then they get back 2,000 words of generic advice they could have Googled. Sound familiar?

The problem isn't the AI. It's the prompt. Here are 10 prompts that actually produce usable marketing output — tested across hundreds of small businesses.

1. The Customer Avatar Builder

You are a market research analyst. My business is [BUSINESS TYPE] targeting [GENERAL AUDIENCE] in [LOCATION]. Build a detailed customer avatar including: demographics, psychographics, top 3 pain points, where they spend time online, what they Google before buying, and their biggest objection to purchasing. Format as a reference card I can pin to my wall.

Why it works: Specificity. You're not asking for generic marketing advice — you're asking for a deliverable with a clear format.

2. The 30-Day Content Calendar

Create a 30-day social media content calendar for a [BUSINESS TYPE]. Include: post topic, caption (under 150 words), suggested image description, best posting time for [PLATFORM], and relevant hashtags. Mix educational (40%), entertaining (30%), and promotional (30%) content.

The Pattern

Notice what all these prompts have in common:

  1. They assign a role to the AI
  2. They specify format and length
  3. They include your business context
  4. They ask for a deliverable, not advice

Generic prompts get generic output. Specific prompts get usable output.
