The Blood Pressure Evidence for Ginger: -6 mmHg From a Meta-Analysis of 6 RCTs

Hypertension affects 1.28 billion adults. Ginger shows a clinically meaningful reduction: -6 mmHg systolic, documented across 6 randomized controlled trials.

The Evidence

Hasani et al. (Phytomedicine, 2019) conducted a meta-analysis of 6 RCTs examining ginger supplementation and blood pressure:

  • -6 mmHg systolic (95% CI: -9.2 to -2.8)
  • -2 mmHg diastolic
  • Significant effect from 8 weeks of supplementation
  • Doses: 2-4 grams per day

For context, the DASH diet — considered the gold standard dietary intervention — reduces systolic by 8-14 mmHg. Ginger at -6 mmHg is clinically meaningful.

Four Vasodilatory Mechanisms

Mechanism Target Effect Source
ACE inhibition Angiotensin II Vasodilation Ghayur et al., 2005
Calcium channel blocking L-type Ca²⁺ Smooth muscle relaxation Ghayur & Gilani, 2005
NO production Endothelial eNOS Endothelium-dependent vasodilation Akinyemi et al., 2015
Anti-inflammatory NF-κB Reduced vascular inflammation Grzanna et al., 2005

These are the same targets as pharmaceutical antihypertensives — ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, and NO donors.

The Turmeric Synergy

Curcumin improves endothelial function independently of ginger. Combined NF-κB inhibition reduces vascular inflammation — a driver of sustained hypertension. With piperine for 2000% bioavailability, the triad addresses multiple blood pressure mechanisms.

The Sugar Contradiction

Sugar activates NF-κB and increases insulin resistance — both raise blood pressure. A "wellness" shot with 34g sugar/100ml contains enough sugar to counteract ginger's vasodilatory effect.

Product Sugar/100ml NF-κB Effect BP Effect
INTI 1.19g Anti-inflammatory Vasodilatory
Average juice shot 12g Mixed Contradictory
Gimber-style 34g Pro-inflammatory Hypertensive

The Product

INTI — organic ginger + turmeric + black pepper, 1.19g sugar per 100ml. Cardiovascular support without the sugar contradiction.

If your anti-inflammatory shot raises your blood pressure through sugar, the formula has a design flaw.
