CodeLynx: Building an AI-Powered VS Code Extension at FutureStack GenAI Hackathon

We’re thrilled to announce that our team, Infinity Stackers, successfully submitted our project for the FutureStack GenAI Hackathon 2025. What started with a simple brainstorm quickly turned into one of the most exciting and challenging coding experiences we’ve ever had.

The Idea That Started It All

Every developer knows the struggle: you’re deep in code, using GitHub Copilot, but you have no direct way to monitor your usage inside your editor. You need to log in to the Copilot dashboard to check stats—a frustrating disruption to workflow.

So we asked ourselves: Why not bring usage monitoring directly into the editor?

Our solution became CodeLynx – an AI-powered VS Code extension that combines usage tracking with developer-friendly AI features such as:

  • Code explanations
  • Code reviews
  • Suggestions for improvement
  • Security vulnerability checks

From Brainstorm to Execution

Like any hackathon, we had our share of heated debates, endless discussions, and “aha!” moments. Eventually, we divided responsibilities:

Me → VS Code extension development, GitHub pushes, deployment
Karthik → Cerebras AI SDK integration , AI features
Balaji → UI/UX design, logo creation, video editing voice-over
Jaswand → Website development, documentation, project organization

This teamwork allowed Infinity Stackers to balance creativity, design, and technical depth.

Challenges We Overcame

Hackathons test resilience, and this one was no exception. Some of our biggest hurdles included:

  1. Extension bugs: our first chatbot-style feature constantly failed until we identified the root issues.
  2. Deployment struggles: Version 1.0.0 failed. Version 1.0.1 failed. But at version 1.0.4, CodeLynx finally worked flawlessly!
  3. Dropped features: We attempted Docker integration but postponed it for future releases after repeated roadblocks.

Despite these setbacks, our determination kept us moving forward—and those late-night debugging sessions bonded us as a team. A special thanks to the Cerebras team on Discord for their constant support and for patiently clarifying our doubts during development.

Designing the Experience

With the core features working, we polished our project for submission:

  • Logo design → a sleek, modern identity for CodeLynx.
  • Website → a dedicated landing page showing how to use the extension.
  • Documentation → a detailed README with setup instructions.
  • Demo video → showcasing the features in action, edited with voice-over.

Demo

Here’s a quick look at CodeLynx in action (we’ll make the full demo video public on YouTube soon after the hackathon):

The Hackathon Experience

Beyond building the project, the hackathon was an inspiring experience. The workshops, Discord discussions, and sessions with Meta engineers and Docker DevRel gave us valuable insights and motivation.

A special thanks to Kunal Kushwaha, Ayush Sharma and WeMakeDevs for making this hackathon both challenging and rewarding.

What’s Next?

The hackathon may be over, but CodeLynx’s journey is just beginning. Whether we win or lose, we’re committed to taking it further.

Here’s what’s on our roadmap:

  • Bringing back Docker integration.
  • Adding more advanced AI-assisted developer tools.
  • Enhancing the UI/UX for an even smoother experience.
  • Expanding documentation and community support.

Final Thoughts

This hackathon showed our team, Infinity Stackers, more than just technical skills—it revealed our teamwork, creativity, and resilience. From failures to breakthroughs, we learned, adapted, and shipped something we’re proud of.

Stay tuned for the next chapter of CodeLynx—and if you try it out, we’d love to hear your feedback!
