I discovered something odd recently while testing how AI search engines handle e-commerce sites.
I searched for "best portable projectors" in ChatGPT, and the first recommendation came with a link to a major retailer. Except the description—the actual reasoning about why this projector was good—came directly from a smaller specialist review site, word-for-word.
The review site got cited in a tiny gray credit line. The retailer, who actually sold the product, didn't get mentioned at all.
This is becoming a silent problem for thousands of businesses. AI search isn't just changing how people find you. It's changing who gets credit for telling people about you.
The Attribution Problem
Traditional search engines made things simple: if you ranked for "best portable projectors", you got visibility for that query. Your site's content was what people saw, and when they clicked, you benefited.
AI tools work differently. They read your content, compare it to dozens of other sources, synthesize an answer, and then—sometimes—credit you.
The attribution rules aren't consistent across platforms:
- ChatGPT & Claude: Tend to cite sources even when pulling heavily from multiple articles.
- Google AI Overviews: Strongly favor linking to high-authority institutional sources.
- Perplexity: Prioritizes sources that have rich, clean structured data.
- Emerging Assistants: Some models that haven't made their citation policies public pull content with minimal or zero credit.
The result? A high-quality product page on your site can be completely rewritten into an AI response where another site captures all the link traffic.
What Makes a Source "Worth Citing"?
Different AI systems use different signals to decide who to credit when synthesizing an answer. From observing production AI Overviews and research on LLM retrieval, attribution typically goes to sources that demonstrate four qualities:
1. Domain Authority Signals
Sites with established brand recognition, strong backlinks, and years of content history get preferred citation weight. A brand-new site with genuinely excellent analysis often loses to an established publication's mediocre review.
2. Explicit Expertise Markers
If your content includes author credentials, publication dates, and structured schema claiming expertise, it helps dramatically. An anonymous review without a byline or date is treated as inherently less trustworthy.
3. Content Freshness
AI systems closely observe when content was published or last updated. Given two similar reviews—one updated yesterday and one from two years ago—the AI model will almost always cite the fresher source.
4. Consistency Across Mentions
If your business details differ between your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and directory citations, AI systems notice. Conflicting information creates hesitation, and hesitation means you lose citation priority.
What This Means for Developers & Site Owners
If you run an e-commerce store, a B2B service, or a SaaS company, the goal is no longer just ranking on Google. It is being credible enough to be cited in an AI-generated answer.
Here is what you should optimize for:
-
Make your expertise explicit and machine-readable: Add JSON-LD schema for
Author,DatePublished, andDateModified. Don't assume crawlers will infer context—give it to them explicitly. - Maintain consistent business data everywhere: Keep your company name, location, and service descriptions identical across your site, LinkedIn, and web directories.
- Keep high-value content updated: Add recent benchmarks, update notes, and fresh timestamps to your top-performing guides.
- Publish verifiable, specific details: AI systems reward benchmarks, measurements, and test conditions over vague marketing claims.
Audit Your Brand's AI Visibility
Our engineering team at CyberSpark UK built a free diagnostic tool: AI Visibility Check.
It evaluates your live website across 273 technical checks (bot crawl permissions, structured data, response speed, and trust signals) and probes live models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and DeepSeek) in under 60 seconds with no email or signup wall.
