Fast answer

Open the Monitor Ghosting Test, set your monitor to the refresh rate you actually use, then compare overdrive Off, Normal, Fast, and Extreme one at a time.

Keep the lowest setting that removes the long same-color trail. If a bright, dark, or opposite-color halo appears, that is inverse ghosting or overshoot, so lower overdrive one step.

Why the fastest mode can look worse

LCD overdrive pushes pixels harder so they reach the target color faster. Push too little and you get normal ghosting: a smeared trail behind motion. Push too much and the pixel overshoots the target, creating coronas or inverse ghosting.

That is why the best setting is often Normal or Medium, not Extreme.

Simple test workflow

  1. Confirm the refresh rate with a Refresh Rate Test.

  3. Start with overdrive Off or Low.
  4. Try Normal, Fast, and Extreme one at a time.
  5. Stop at the highest mode that reduces the trail without halos.
  6. Recheck the same setting in a real game or scrolling workload.

When it is not ghosting
