Mouse Polling Rate Test: Check Mouse Hz and Fix Low Readings

Your 1000Hz mouse shows 800Hz. Your 8000Hz mouse refuses to get past 1000Hz. That does not always mean the mouse is broken.

Fast answer

Open the Mouse Polling Rate Test, click the test area, and move the mouse in fast circles for 10-20 seconds.

Read the repeated tier, not one lucky spike:

  • 125Hz: common office/Bluetooth tier.
  • 500Hz: usable gaming tier.
  • 1000Hz: the best default for most gaming mice.
  • 4000Hz/8000Hz: useful only when the mouse, receiver, CPU, game, and monitor path stay stable.

A browser test estimates the movement events that reached the browser. It is good for proving the general tier, but it is not the same as a hardware USB analyzer.

How to run the test cleanly

  1. Use Chrome or Edge if possible.
  2. Close heavy tabs, screen recorders, overlays, and RGB control apps.
  3. Set the intended report rate in Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, Corsair iCUE, SteelSeries GG, or your mouse app.
  4. Click the test area.
  5. Move the mouse in fast circles or figure-eight patterns for 10-20 seconds.
  6. Repeat the run two or three times.

If every run lands in the same range, trust the tier. If one run spikes and the others are low, keep diagnosing.

What the numbers mean

The simple conversion is 1000 / Hz = approximate milliseconds per report.

Why a 1000Hz mouse reads low

If a 1000Hz mouse peaks around 850-1000Hz in a browser, that is usually normal. Browser event timing, display refresh, OS scheduling, and your movement pattern can make the measured event rate lower than the hardware profile.

If it stays near 125Hz or 250Hz, check these first:

  • The mouse profile may not be set to 1000Hz.
  • Bluetooth may be active instead of 2.4GHz or wired mode.
  • A USB hub, dock, KVM, or extension cable may be limiting the path.
  • The mouse may be in battery saver mode.
  • A game-specific profile may override the desktop profile.

Why an 8000Hz mouse only shows 1000Hz

For 8000Hz mice, the usual cause is not the browser alone. Check the ecosystem:

  • Is the correct 4K/8K receiver connected?
  • Does the mouse need a firmware update?
  • Is the polling rate saved to the active onboard profile?
  • Does the model support 8000Hz wired only, wireless only with a dongle, or both?
  • Is the PC overloaded when processing high-frequency input events?

A stable 1000Hz setting is often better than an unstable 8000Hz setting that causes stutter, drains battery, or raises CPU load.

Then retest with the same browser and the same movement pattern.

1000Hz vs 8000Hz

8000Hz has a lower theoretical interval than 1000Hz, but the practical gain is conditional. You need a compatible mouse, receiver, firmware, high frame rate, strong CPU, and a game that handles the input rate well.

For most users, 1000Hz is the right default. Try 4000Hz or 8000Hz only if the result is stable and the game does not stutter.
