HackerRank just changed the job interview — and it did it by putting AI on both sides of the table.
Chakra is HackerRank's new AI interviewer agent. Instead of grading a coding test after the fact, it conducts the interview itself: candidates get a real-world task inside a real code repository, work with an integrated AI assistant, answer follow-up questions as they go, and get a scored report.
It went generally available on October 5, 2026, after a six-month beta in which it ran more than 500,000 interviews with companies including Snowflake, Snorkel, and Capgemini.
Why now
Technical interviews have been quietly breaking. Candidates can have an AI model solve a take-home problem or whisper answers during a live round — and interviewers know it. HackerRank's answer is to stop fighting that reality and start measuring it. If AI is part of every developer's workflow, then how a candidate uses AI becomes the skill worth testing.
How a Chakra interview works
- The hiring team configures the role: skills, difficulty, integrity settings. Setup takes under 15 minutes.
- The candidate gets a link — no scheduling, no time-zone juggling.
- The candidate works on a real repo task with an AI assistant. Chakra watches, asks follow-ups ("Why this approach? What if the constraint changed?"), and adapts — strong answers earn harder probes.
- The hiring team gets competency scores, strengths and gaps, and the evidence behind each score. The final hiring decision stays human.
What it actually measures
Not output — process. Three things: AI fluency (framing problems for an AI assistant, judging its output), critical thinking (defending the code you accept), and judgment (knowing when to override the AI). As HackerRank CEO Vivek Ravisankar put it, anyone can produce a finished artifact now. The question is whether you understand the thinking behind it.
The surprise result
When candidates could use AI openly, suspicious-activity flags fell 70–80% versus traditional proctored assessments. When AI use is permitted and visible, the incentive to secretly run external tools disappears. Unauthorized tools like Cluely and second-device help are still flagged.
The catch
No public pricing — expect quote-based enterprise pricing. And AI hiring tools are heavily regulated: NYC's Local Law 144 requires bias audits, and the EU AI Act treats employment AI as high-risk. The legal obligation sits with the employer, not just the vendor.
Verdict
Chakra is the most honest response yet to the collapse of the traditional coding interview. Use it as a structured first filter, and let humans do what they're best at: curiosity, communication, culture fit.
