Crypto Payment Gateways for Global Creators

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

Our company, a global network of creators, faced a problem: payments from crypto wallets across the globe were a logistical nightmare. We needed a solution that integrated with our e-commerce platform, handled variable exchange rates, and ensured timely delivery of funds to our creators. That meant no more manual transfers, no more lost payments, and no more wondering who would cover the exchange fees.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

Initially, we tried integrating a traditional payment gateway that supported Bitcoin and a few other cryptocurrencies. However, the service relied on a third-party API to convert the payment to dollars, which led to inconsistent and unpredictable exchange rates. We soon realized that this approach would leave us vulnerable to rate fluctuations and added unnecessary complexity to our system. Not to mention the countless support tickets we received from frustrated creators who received less than they expected.

The Architecture Decision

After months of experimentation, we decided to adopt Unchained Commerce, a platform-as-a-service that allows for direct cryptocurrency settlements. We chose to use their built-in exchange rate service, which enabled us to settle payments in a stablecoin (USDC) and avoid exposure to market volatility. This architecture decision paid off in several key ways: reduced exchange rate risks, faster payment processing times (typically 15-30 minutes), and improved overall system reliability.

What The Numbers Said After

The numbers told a compelling story: after adopting Unchained Commerce, our payment processing time decreased by 75%, and the number of payment-related support tickets dropped by 90%. Our creators were able to receive their hard-earned money in a stable and predictable manner, which directly influenced their level of trust in our platform. From an engineering perspective, we saw a reduction in the average time spent troubleshooting and resolving payment-related issues.

What I Would Do Differently

In retrospect, I would have explored Unchained Commerce earlier in our development cycle. We spent precious time fighting the fires caused by our initial payment gateway integration. Looking back, I wish we had done more research on the risks associated with traditional payment gateways and the benefits of platforms like Unchained Commerce. If I were to redo the architecture decision, I would also consider integrating additional services, such as automated KYC/AML checkouts and in-app wallets, to further streamline the payment experience for our creators.
