The Problem We Were Actually Solving
We needed a flexible and scalable solution to sell our digital products to customers worldwide, without the hassle of manual order fulfillment and payment processing. Our product, the eBook, was just the starting point. We envisioned a platform where developers and creators could sell their digital wares directly to customers, without the need for intermediaries or platform-approved products.
What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)
Our initial approach was to integrate a popular crypto checkout solution with the platform store. We thought this would be a seamless way to accept payments directly from customers, bypassing the platform's traditional payment processing. However, we soon realized that this setup introduced new complexities, such as coordinating with the platform's support team to whitelist the crypto checkout solution, and dealing with the inevitable chargebacks and disputes. The platform's underlying architecture wasn't designed for this type of integration, leading to a suboptimal user experience and higher operational costs.
The Architecture Decision
After much deliberation, we decided to build our own digital store using a headless e-commerce framework. We chose this approach for its flexibility and scalability, allowing us to customize the checkout process and payment gateways to suit our specific needs. We also implemented a robust billing system, ensuring seamless order fulfillment and dispute resolution. By doing so, we broke free from the limitations of traditional e-commerce platforms and created a more streamlined experience for our customers.
What The Numbers Said After
After launching our custom-built digital store, we noticed a significant increase in sales and a substantial reduction in operational overhead. Our platform now processes payments in over 150 countries, with an average order value of $25. By cutting ties with traditional e-commerce platforms, we achieved an average conversion rate of 30%, compared to the 15% we experienced with the platform store. Our customers also appreciated the ability to purchase digital products with their preferred payment method, resulting in a substantial decrease in chargebacks and disputes.
What I Would Do Differently
In hindsight, I would have invested more time in understanding the underlying architecture of the platform store and the implications of integrating a crypto checkout solution. By doing so, we could have avoided some of the complexities and operational costs associated with this setup. Nevertheless, our decision to build our own digital store has proven to be a resounding success, allowing us to create a seamless and flexible experience for our customers, and paving the way for future growth and innovation.
