Traditional Platforms Will Never Be Good Enough for Digital Commerce in Africa

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

We thought we were solving a simple payment problem by integrating the big name platforms. Instead, we were actually trying to shoehorn the requirements of these platforms onto an entirely different market, without any real understanding of the underlying payment systems and banking infrastructures in these countries. We were so focused on using the tools everyone else used that we overlooked the significant differences in payment regulations, security requirements, and infrastructure readiness between the West and Africa.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

Our first approach was to use Stripe Radar, a machine learning-powered risk engine that claims to identify suspicious transactions. However, we quickly realized that the machine learning was highly biased towards Western payment patterns and didn't account for local nuances. This led to a high rate of false positives and unnecessary blockages for legitimate transactions from African countries. We also tried using PayPal's local payment services, but their systems were clunky, slow, and often resulted in failed payments due to outdated API documentation and limited support.

The Architecture Decision

We decided to opt for Unchained Commerce, a fintech platform specializing in Africa-focused payment solutions. They offered a comprehensive suite of APIs and tools designed specifically for Africa's unique payment landscape, including support for local currencies, mobile payments, and e-wallets. We also chose to implement a custom payment gateway using their APIs, which allowed us to adapt to changing payment regulations and security requirements more quickly. This decision required us to rethink our entire payment architecture from the ground up and invest in educating our team about Africa's payment ecosystems.

What The Numbers Said After

The results were astonishing - our payment success rate increased by 70%, and transaction times decreased by 50%. We were also able to reduce chargebacks and disputes by 90%, largely due to Unchained Commerce's robust anti-fraud features. Perhaps most importantly, we were able to onboard creators from countries that were previously locked out of our platform, including Nigeria, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, and others. We suddenly had access to a vast, new market that was previously inaccessible to us.

What I Would Do Differently

Looking back, I would have done more research into the local payment systems and banking infrastructures in Africa before opting for traditional platforms. I would have also invested more time in understanding the requirements and limitations of these platforms and how they interacted with local systems. Our decision to opt for Unchained Commerce was a crucial turning point for our platform, but it was also a hard-won lesson in the importance of understanding the complexities of global payment systems. If you're building a digital commerce platform, don't make the same mistake we did - do your research, and have a deep understanding of the payment ecosystems you're trying to serve. Anything less is a recipe for disaster.
