Here's a dirty secret about mental health apps: most of them are designed to
keep you from leaving.
Not overtly. Not maliciously. But the architecture makes it hard. Your
conversation history is on their servers. Your mood logs are tied to an
account. Your journal entries live in their database. To leave, you'd lose
everything — months or years of personal, sensitive data.
That's not a feature. That's a hostage situation.
What we did differently
When we built GentleQuest, we started with one question: what would make it
easy to leave?
If the answer is "nothing" — if leaving means losing your data, your history,
your safety plan — then we've built a trap, not a tool.
So we made three architectural choices:
1. Everything is local first
Your conversations, mood logs, journal entries, and safety plan are stored on
your device. Not on our servers. We don't have a database of your mental health
data. We can't lose it, leak it, or sell it — because we don't have it.
2. Export anytime, one tap
Settings → Export. That's it. You get a file with everything — every
conversation, every mood entry, every journal note. Take it with you. Import
it somewhere else. Print it. Delete it. It's yours.
3. Delete everything, no questions asked
Settings → Delete Account. One tap. One confirmation. Gone. Not "deactivated."
Not "archived for 30 days." Deleted. From your device. Permanently.
Anonymous mode
If you don't want to create an account at all — don't. GentleQuest works in
anonymous mode. No email. No name. No profile. You can use every feature —
chat, mood tracking, quests, journaling, safety plan — without telling us who
you are.
We can't tie your data to you because we never asked who you are.
No tracking, no ads
We don't track you. No analytics SDKs watching your taps. No ad networks
profiling your mental health. No "we share data with partners" clause in the
privacy policy.
The app is free. The cost is zero. The trade is zero.
Why this matters for mental health specifically
Mental health data is the most sensitive data most people will ever generate.
It's more personal than financial data. It's more revealing than location
data. It's the record of your worst moments, your fears, your coping
mechanisms, your crisis states.
If that data lives on someone else's server, you're trusting them with the
most intimate picture of your inner life. And you're trusting every employee
they'll ever hire, every breach they'll ever suffer, every acquisition they'll
ever go through.
We'd rather not have it. We'd rather you have it.
The test
If you're evaluating a mental health app, ask one question: "How do I leave?"
If the answer is complicated — if you have to email support, if your data is
on their servers, if "delete" means "deactivate" — then you're not the user.
You're the product.
If the answer is "Settings → Export, then Settings → Delete" — you're in the
right place.
