I see that https://dev.to generates an image on the fly, if I don't supply a header image.
I use a favicon generator I found on the web, but how do I create on myself, with fonts randomly picked from Google fonts, for instance?

For the favicon, you need to use an image editing program like GIMP or Photoshop. Create an image 32x32 pixels and create to your heart's content, then export as an icon (.ico) file.
For the OpenGraph image (og:image), I would recommend a size of around 600x420 or larger. You can edit it in GIMP or Photoshop as well and export it as a PNG.
