Hey everyone, I just finished an incredible internship and wanted to share the experience. Last July, I got a chance to intern with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Mombasa, Kenya. It was a crazy ride and a total game-changer for me.
The application process was no joke—a bunch of online assessments, a written case study, and a few follow-up calls. When I finally got the offer, I packed my bags and moved to Mombasa. I joined a fantastic team that was super welcoming and supportive from day one.
My work was a mix of a lot of different things, which I loved:
- Building dashboards. I got to build operational dashboards for the supply chain and logistics teams. It was cool seeing how the data I was working with helped them make real-time decisions.
- Automation. I built some scripts to automate reports and cut down on a ton of manual work.
- ETL. I spent a lot of time cleaning and validating data before loading it into the database.
- System testing. I even got to help test a new inventory tracking module.
- Learning. I basically lived in Power BI, SQL, and SharePoint, so my skills in those areas leveled up big time.
My biggest achievements were probably building an automated daily logistics report and creating some prototype KPI dashboards. It felt good to see something I built being used to help WFP’s operations.
Looking back, this internship was a huge turning point. It showed me how much of an impact data can have, especially in high-stakes, humanitarian work. I'm grateful to the WFP team in Mombasa and am excited to take this experience with me to future roles.
