I needed to keep Thunderbird and Firefox backed up. MozBackup was the obvious tool — I'd used it for years and it did the job.
For a long time it wasn't being developed. It came back in 2025 (the 1.6 betas), which is genuinely good news for everyone who relies on it.
But by then I'd realized what I actually wanted wasn't a better manual backup. It was not having to remember:
- backups on a schedule, without me setting up scripts or Task Scheduler
- several versions kept, old ones cleaned up automatically
- a restore I could trust on a different PC
So I built that.
That's how Stash started.
