Cline vs Zed in 2026: Free Agent vs Free Editor, and a Gap in Both Our Pages

Cline and Zed are both free, both open source, and both genuinely well-regarded tools in our testing (4/5 each) — which makes the comparison less about "which is better" and more about "which piece of your workflow does each one own." Cline is a VS Code agent: Plan/Act modes, terminal execution, MCP support, bring-your-own API key. Zed is a Rust-native editor that stays agent-agnostic via ACP, meaning you can point Claude Code, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI at it instead of Zed building its own competing agent.

Pricing hasn't moved on either side. Cline is still Free (OSS) with an optional custom-priced Enterprise tier; Zed is Personal free, Pro $10/mo, Business $30/seat/mo. Both re-verified against the vendor's own pricing page this month.

Two things our own comparison page doesn't mention yet, which we're flagging rather than quietly fixing:

  • Cline shipped hosted "Cloud sessions" on 16 October (v4.1.25). Tasks now run in a sandbox against a chosen GitHub repo/branch, keep going after you close the editor, and notify you on completion — a real step past "agent that only runs while VS Code is open." It's still rolling out gradually and Cline hasn't published pricing or terms for it, so treat it as "coming, not priced" rather than a free upgrade.
  • There's also a $9.99/mo ClinePass add-on (live since late June) for discounted access to open-weight models, that doesn't show up in Cline's own pricing page or ours. Core Cline is still free and BYO-key either way — this is an optional extra, not a tier change.

Separately, Cline's GitHub issue tracker currently shows close to ten distinct reliability reports in flight — Plan/Act mode desync, MCP tool-list changes getting ignored mid-session, OOM after long JetBrains sessions, duplicate SSH sessions, auto-compaction firing early. That's not one repeated bug, and GitHub issues don't carry traffic numbers the way Stack Overflow does, so treat it as "several loose ends open right now" rather than a verdict on stability.

Zed, by contrast, had nothing comparable turn up this check — no pricing change, no open reliability cluster, same numbers since we started tracking it.

We have no affiliate or commission relationship with either Cline or Zed — neither runs a publisher programme we're aware of. Pricing re-checked 18 October 2026 for both tools; the Cloud-sessions and ClinePass gaps were checked directly against Cline's own release notes and docs this week.
