Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: pick by what you'll review at the end

Claude Code and GitHub Copilot keep showing up in the same sentence, usually from someone who already has a repository open and hasn't decided what kind of help they actually want. They are not the same tool, and picking the wrong one mostly costs you time.

This is a short version of our guide, Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot. It only uses the rankings and verdicts we've already published. There are no prices, completion limits or benchmark numbers here, on purpose. Check current pricing before you buy a plan.

The short version

On our Best for Vibe Coding list the editorial order is Cursor, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, then Replit Agent. Claude Code is second. Copilot is fourth.

  • "Go do this in the repo, from a terminal, across a large codebase." Use Claude Code.
  • "The company already pays for the seat and the edit is routine." Use GitHub Copilot.

Claude Code: when the terminal is the interface

Claude Code is a terminal coding agent from Anthropic. It's the better fit when the job is a plan carried out in the repo, not a completion popping up as you type. It plans well across a large codebase.

It's the wrong pick if you want inline diffs as your main way of reviewing changes. If you think in a shell, it matches how you work. If you wanted a one-line completion inside the IDE, you wanted Copilot.

GitHub Copilot: when the seat is already paid for

Copilot is the coding assistant most teams already have a seat for. Inline completions are reliable, and agent mode now covers routine edits. It isn't the strongest autonomous coder on our list, which is why it sits at fourth.

Stay with it when the constraint is that seat and the edit is routine. Leave when the change spans the whole project and what you'll review is a plan, not a completion.

Where the others fit

  • Cursor (first): if your review happens as a diff in the editor, where you accept or reject hunks, you've left this pair. See Cursor vs Claude Code.
  • OpenAI Codex (third): useful when the task should run in a cloud sandbox away from your laptop.
  • Replit Agent (fifth): the fastest path from a sentence to a hosted app when there's no project yet, and the wrong tool for a private codebase you already maintain.

One test before you choose

Name the thing you'll review at the end. A terminal plan points to Claude Code. A completion in the editor you already pay for points to Copilot. An editor diff points to Cursor. If you can't name it yet, you don't have a comparison yet.
