Cursor and OpenAI Codex get compared as if one were the coding assistant and the other a slower copy. They win different jobs. The easiest way to pick is to name the thing you'll review at the end before you name a brand.
This is a short version of our guide, Cursor vs OpenAI Codex. It only uses the rankings we've already published. There are no prices or benchmark scores here, on purpose. Check current pricing before you buy a plan.
The short version
On our Best for Vibe Coding list the editorial order is Cursor, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, then Replit Agent.
- "I'm in the editor and I want a diff I can reject hunk by hunk." Use Cursor.
- "Run this while I'm away and leave a GitHub trail." Use Codex.
- "Go do this in the repo from a terminal." That's Claude Code, not either of these.
- "We already pay for Copilot and this is a routine edit." Stay with Copilot.
- "I'm starting from an empty folder and want something hosted." That's Replit Agent.
Cursor: when the diff is the point
Cursor is first because it's the closest thing to a default when the agent has to live in your editor. It takes a multi-file change, applies it, and lets you reject hunks without leaving the project.
The catch is that vague prompts send it wandering, and it'll spend tokens proving it. Describe the change in a sentence a teammate would understand, look at the diff, keep the good parts. If you can't write that sentence, a stronger model won't save the session.
Codex: when the laptop should be closed
OpenAI Codex is third. It's a capable agent that works in a cloud sandbox with a GitHub loop, which makes it useful when the task should run away from your laptop.
You hand Codex a job, it works in the cloud, and what you review is closer to a pull request than to a hunk in the file you have open. That's a real product difference, not a slower Cursor. OpenAI's newer fast API tier doesn't change that; it's an API option, not a different product.
The one question
Ask yourself what you'll be looking at when the work is done. A diff in your open editor points to Cursor. A pull request you check later points to Codex. Getting that one answer right matters more than any leaderboard.
The full five-tool walk is in Best AI tool for coding, and the editor-against-terminal matchup is Cursor vs Claude Code.
