When people talk about sports lighting, the first thing they often think about is simply brightness.
But for a professional sports venue, lighting is much more than that.
A football field can be bright enough for players to see the ball — but is the lighting uniform?
Can spectators clearly follow the game?
Can cameras capture high-quality footage without flicker?
Are there uncomfortable glare points for players?
And most importantly, does the actual lighting result match the original lighting design?
These are the questions that make sports lighting different from ordinary outdoor lighting.
Good sports lighting is about balance
A professional lighting system needs to consider several factors:
• Illuminance
• Uniformity
• Glare control
• Color rendering
• Flicker performance
• Beam angles
• Installation height and aiming angles
• Broadcast requirements
• Energy efficiency
For different venues, the requirements can be completely different.
What do you think?
When choosing lighting for a sports project, what do you consider the most important factor?
Brightness? Uniformity? Glare control? Broadcast quality? Energy efficiency? Or something else?
I'd be interested to hear how lighting designers, contractors and sports facility professionals approach this question.
