The cutting-edge system you fight to understand today is, with grimly reliable frequency, the thing someone a decade from now will be paid to keep alive long enough to migrate away from. Every shiny new platform is a future legacy system that just hasn't aged yet.
AI is accelerating this cycle rather than exempting anyone from it. The specific tools, frameworks, and even the ways we interact with machines are turning over faster than ever, and the pace shows no sign of relenting. If you tie your professional identity to a particular technology, you are betting your relevance on that technology aging slowly, and that is a bet the industry has spent my entire career losing on people's behalf. The comfort of deep tool-specific mastery is real, and it is also a slowly ticking clock.
What I have chosen to invest in instead is the layer underneath the tools, the reasoning that outlives any of them. How systems fail, how complexity compounds, how to learn something unfamiliar quickly and without ego. That knowledge does not become legacy, because it was never tied to a version number. The tools will keep turning into the past. The thinking is the only part that stays current.
Master your tools, by all means. Just do not mistake them for your career, because you are always, quietly, learning tomorrow's legacy system.
