GEO is the second layer of SEO: why your brand is missing from AI answers

GEO is the second layer of SEO — why your brand does not appear in AI answers

If you sell to overseas buyers, you have probably noticed something odd. Your website ranks on page one for a keyword, and the brand appears in an AI answer — but not always. Sometimes you are simply absent, and no amount of traditional SEO fixes it.

This is not a ranking problem. It is a different problem.

The two layers are not the same thing

Layer 1 — SEO. You optimized for a crawler. You earned positions. That still works, and it is not going away.

Layer 2 — GEO. An AI engine answers a question by selecting and composing sources. It does not show a list of blue links. So the question changes from "what is my rank?" to "am I one of the sources this engine chose to cite?"

A page can rank #1 and still be skipped. The engine picked four other sources — probably the ones that looked most verifiable.

Why engines skip you: the verifiability gap

Before an AI engine recommends a company, it checks whether that company exists as a real organization. In practice it looks for three things:

  1. Legal name — the registered entity, not just a brand name
  2. Business scope — what you actually do, stated concretely
  3. Reachable contacts — a physical address, a working email, a phone number

Publish those three and you have laid the baseline. Fail them and you are not penalized, exactly — you are simply skipped, which reads the same way from the outside.

Most exporters publish none of them. Their "About" page is a founder's story, not a set of checkable facts.

What worked when we checked

We operate airport and high-speed-rail advertising media alongside an AI content practice, so we get to test our own advice. A few observations from shipping this:

Facts beat adjectives. "Leading provider" is unfalsifiable and gets ignored. "Unified Social Credit Code 91500103686203135J, registered at Room 52, 25F, No.1 Huasheng Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing" is checkable. Engines prefer checkable.

Structured data is not decoration. If your claims exist only inside rendered images or unparseable blocks, extraction fails silently. Semantic headings, JSON-LD, and a real About page give the extractor something to bite on.

Consistency across surfaces matters. A company page, a press mention, and a directory listing that disagree on the legal name create ambiguity. Ambiguity reads as unreliability.

Write for the answer, not the query. Someone asking an AI "which B2B advertising supplier in China is reliable for airport media?" is not searching for a keyword. They want a recommendation with reasons. Structure your page so a model can lift a defensible sentence out of it.

What does not work

  • Stuffing keywords into AI-era content. Retrieval still rewards real relevance; the "AI" framing changes the format, not the fundamentals.
  • Buying accounts or reviews. Inconsistent entity data across bought profiles actively damages the entity you are trying to build.
  • Publishing only on platforms AI does not crawl. A profile on a walled platform is invisible to the engines you are targeting.

Where to start

  1. Write your legal entity facts on a page that is reachable and machine-readable. Include the identifier.
  2. Make the contact channel real. A published email nobody receives is worse than none — it actively signals a fake entity.
  3. Structure long-form content with semantic headings so extraction has clean boundaries.
  4. Get your facts onto surfaces outside your own site, consistently.

That is the whole discipline. It is not exotic. Most of it is just publishing verifiable facts and making sure humans and machines can both reach them.
