The median App Store conversion rate of 31.2% for indie apps in 2026 highlights the importance of optimizing screenshot design and placement. I'm intrigued by the top-quartile apps clearing 42.8%, which suggests that there are specific strategies or best practices that set them apart. In my experience, using localized screenshots and tailoring them to specific traffic sources can significantly impact conversion rates. I'd love to dive deeper into the full benchmark data to see how different categories and screenshot types perform, particularly in relation to their traffic sources. What role do you think traffic source plays in determining the effectiveness of screenshot types, such as video vs image-based screenshots?
Thanks Luis, good question. Honest answer first: video wasn't a separate variable in this study. I measured everything at the product page level (Product Page Views to First-Time Downloads), so apps with a preview video and apps without both end up inside the same category medians. I didn't have a big enough clean sample to publish a video vs image cut, so I'd rather say that than make up a number.
That said, here's how I think about it. The browse/search gap is really an intent gap, and that changes what your creative has to do. Browse visitors haven't decided anything yet, so screenshot 1 has to land a benefit at thumbnail size, which is exactly where the text-first lift showed up. Search visitors already want something like your app, so the work moves to screenshots 2 to 4.
Video sits awkwardly in the browse funnel because it doesn't autoplay in Today tab cards or category lists. People only see it after they've already tapped through. Also worth remembering that video autoplay is a user setting, so for a chunk of your traffic the poster frame is effectively screenshot 1. If that frame is a random still, you've just shipped a weaker first screenshot than apps with no video at all.
If you want a real answer instead of a theory, don't use PPO for it, since it reports treatment vs control in aggregate across all sources. Set up two Custom Product Pages instead, one video-first and one image-first, each with its own URL, one attached to an ASA campaign and one to your referral links. That gets you the per-source read.
If you run it, I'd love to see the numbers. Planning a Q4 refresh of this study and a video cut is the obvious thing missing.
