How do you answer "that's too expensive" without discounting?

Most freelancers don't lose deals because their craft is weak.

They lose them in the 90 seconds after a prospect says: "That's too expensive."

Here's a workflow that has worked better than improvising in chat:

1) Separate floor / target / stretch before the call

Write three numbers for each offer type (landing page, retainer, audit, etc.):

  • Floor — you'll walk away below this
  • Target — what you actually want to charge
  • Stretch — if they're easy, fast, or high-stakes

Keep that private. Never negotiate from memory.

2) Answer the objection with a question, not a discount

Try (adapt the brackets):

"Happy to look at budget. Are we optimizing for speed, quality of collaboration, or lowest cash outlay right now? Those three usually point to different packages."

If they pick lowest cash outlay, offer a smaller scope — not a cheaper version of the same scope.

3) Use one AI prompt to draft the reply — then edit in your voice

Paste your packages + their message into something like:

"Rewrite this pricing objection reply. Keep my floor. Offer a smaller-scope option. Sound calm and specific. No hype."

You'll get a usable first draft in under a minute. Edit ~20%. Send.

Curious what objection kills most of your deals lately — price, timeline, or "we'll get back to you"?

If you want ready-to-run versions of that prompt (plus discovery-call agenda, proposal-from-notes, follow-ups), I put a free 10-prompt pack for freelancers here: https://talyami.gumroad.com/l/zmxyed
