Most freelancers don't undercharge because they lack skill.
They undercharge because they invent numbers in the chat.
A simple freelancer rate card template fixes that: three numbers per offer, written before the call, that you never negotiate from memory.
The 3-number rate card
For each service (audit, landing page, retainer, etc.), write:
- Floor — walk away below this
- Target — what you actually want
- Stretch — for easy / fast / high-stakes work
Keep the sheet private. Share packages, not your floor.
What to put on a printable rate card
- Service name + one-line outcome
- Starter / Pro / Premium package ranges
- What's included / excluded
- Revision policy in one line
- Typical turnaround
Optional: a one-page quote sheet you fill per prospect so every quote looks consistent.
Answer "that's too expensive" without discounting
Don't drop the price of the same scope. Shrink the scope:
Happy to look at budget. Are we optimizing for speed, collaboration quality, or lowest cash outlay? Those usually map to different packages.
Use AI for the first draft — not the final voice
Paste your packages + their message into a prompt:
Rewrite this pricing objection reply. Keep my floor. Offer a smaller-scope option. Sound calm and specific. No hype.
Edit 20%. Send.
