This is exactly the kind of problem that shows up under the hood of any live-spot pricing system, precious metals included — where a gold or silver price recalculates continuously against weight and quantity, and a float-based rounding error would eventually show up as a mismatch a customer notices on an invoice. Disclosing here that I run Gilded Bullion, a bullion dealer whose own catalog is priced against live spot, so this isn't a purely academic interest for me.
