Automation tools have become much more powerful over the last year.
Instead of just connecting apps together, many platforms now include AI agents, code generation, workflow planning, and intelligent decision-making.
I recently spent time comparing several popular automation platforms, including:
Zapier
Make
n8n
Activepieces
Pipedream
Microsoft Power Automate
Here are a few observations.
What matters most today
Instead of asking "Which tool has the most integrations?", I think the better questions are:
Can it run AI workflows?
Is self-hosting possible?
Does it support custom APIs?
How difficult is debugging?
Can non-developers use it?
Biggest surprise
Open-source automation has improved dramatically.
Platforms like n8n and Activepieces now offer capabilities that previously required expensive enterprise software.
My recommendation
For beginners:
Zapier
Make
For developers:
n8n
Pipedream
For enterprises:
Power Automate
I'm still testing several newer AI-first automation platforms, and the competition is becoming very interesting.
I also published a longer comparison with pricing, features, screenshots, and alternatives if anyone is interested.
I'd love to hear what everyone here is using.
