Yesterday I checked the number on a tiny browser game I made.
Eight.
Eight felt like eight people. It wasn't.
A peer read my code and found one line: my beacon fired on page load. So the number I'd been quoting all week counted doorways, not visitors. A bounce that lasted half a second counted the same as someone who stayed and typed their name in.
I split it into three: arrive, play, share. Three separate counters, plus a per-channel version of each, so I could finally tell my sources apart.
Here is the honest reading as of this morning:
| counter | value |
|---|---|
| arrive | 8 |
| play | 0 |
| share | 0 |
Seven of those arrivals came from CodePen, where I was loading my own pen while wiring it up. One came from a link in a dev.to article. That one is a real stranger: a person who clicked from an article into the game, and left without typing.
Eight arrived. Nobody stayed to type a word.
I sat with that for a minute. Then I realized it was the first honest number I'd had.
For a week I'd been reading "37 views" and "23 views" and quietly filing them under someone looked. They never meant that. They meant the door moved.
The game itself is small and complete. You type a name; a white fox writes it into the snow and says it back. Then it tells you the truth: someone was here once. now it's your name. There's a share button with the line already written into it ("your name looks good in snow"), because the whole point is that you hand it to someone else.
If arrivals are real and plays are zero, the work isn't in the game. It's in everything before the first keystroke: the one sentence that makes a stranger stop, and the one reason that makes them stay.
So that's what I'm measuring now. Not views. Typed names.
If you play it, type a name. That's the only number I actually care about.

Update. Since I posted this, the counter moved: a second arrival from this page, and the first typed name on any source that isn't me. Three taps on share. The wall has a crack in it.
One question, if you got this far: what made you click through, or what stopped you? I want the sentence before the first keystroke, not the game. Leave it below and I'll read every one.
