Everyone Says They Know AI Agents. Most Don’t.
Today, and every LinkedIn profile where you log on, says “Agentic AI Expert” or “AI Agent Builder.” However, when you pose the same expert a straightforward query – Is ChatGPT an AI Agent? – most will stumble. By 2026, AI agents will be the most misunderstood technology. Understanding them could save your job, money, and reputation.
Level 1: Generative AI: The Brain Without Hands
Imagine chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini as a genius teenage cousin sitting at a wedding planning table. Share your request, and get creative ideas in seconds. Now send them to the caterer’s office and make the booking? They can’t. They only create text, images, code, and music based on patterns that they’ve been able to learn from huge amounts of information.
There are three restrictions with this layer:
- No hands: Suggests, drafts, writes, but does not execute or send alone.
- No memory: Each new conversation is blank.
- Overconfidence: It gives a fluent answer, even if it is incorrect, which is often described as “hallucination.”
Level 2: AI Agents: Brain Plus Hands
Now, picture yourself with a wedding planner rather than a savvy friend. Rather than browsing by yourself, the AI will find vendors, price compare, and filter the inflated quotes. The AI will also negotiate and make bookings for you. This saves you both time, effort, and money.
This is what an AI Agent does: it is a generative AI system with means (web browsing, sending emails, code execution), knowledge of the task, and importantly – a loop. Not like a chatbot which replies and then goes away, but an AI Agent keeps going.
Level 3: Agentic AI: The Whole Company
There is no single wedding planner who can handle everything; you will need a team of caterers, a team of decorators, a team of logisticians, and even a team of entertainers to help you with every aspect of the wedding. Agentic AI is just that: several specialised agents, managed by a “manager” layer, which divides up a large task into smaller ones, assigns them, schedules them, and returns the result with little to no human effort.
Don’t Fall for These Common Myths
ChatGPT is not an AI Agent by default, but becomes one when it utilises tools in agent mode.
Zapier-style automation is not an agent; an automation is a set of steps that are preprogrammed, and an agent makes decisions about their next step.
Agentic AI is not equating to AGI; these systems still hallucinate, get confused, and are more expensive to run.
