Ask the community: Is $20/month for AI worth it in 2026? (honest discussion)

Ask the community: Is $20/month for AI worth it in 2026?

I've been thinking about this a lot after GPT-5.5 dropped this week.

Every 6-9 months, a new model comes out. Every time, there's the same cycle:

  1. New model announced
  2. Existing tier gets "degraded" to make room
  3. You either pay more or fall behind
  4. Repeat

I call this the upgrade treadmill. And I'm genuinely tired of it.

What $20/month actually costs around the world

Here's something I think about a lot. The same $20/month ChatGPT subscription costs:

Country Monthly salary (dev) ChatGPT cost % of income
USA ~$8,000 $20 0.25%
India ~$800 $20 (≈₹1,650) 2.5%
Nigeria ~$400 $20 (≈₦32,000) 5%
Philippines ~$600 $20 (≈₱1,120) 3.3%
Kenya ~$300 $20 (≈KSh2,600) 6.7%

For a developer in Lagos or Nairobi, $20/month is a significant financial decision. For a developer in San Francisco, it's a rounding error.

The AI tools are being priced for Silicon Valley salaries but marketed globally.

What changed my mind

About 8 months ago, I switched from per-token billing to a flat-rate setup. The thing I was most worried about — "what if the model gets worse?" — turned out to be a feature, not a bug.

When you're on flat-rate, you're insulated from:

  • Model tier changes
  • Token price increases
  • Feature gating ("that's only in Pro")
  • The quarterly upgrade anxiety

I use SimplyLouie — it's $2/month, built on Claude, and honestly I use it more than I ever used ChatGPT because I'm not thinking about cost per query.

The thing I genuinely can't decide

Here's what I'm wrestling with: Is the "latest model" worth the premium, or is 95% of the value in "a good model" regardless of which generation?

For code review, I genuinely can't tell the difference between GPT-4o and GPT-5.5 on most of my real-world tasks. But for complex multi-step reasoning? Maybe there's a real gap.

The question I want to ask you

What's the actual use case where you noticed GPT-5.5 (or any latest model) is meaningfully better than what you had 6 months ago?

Not theoretical benchmarks. Real work tasks where you felt the upgrade was worth it.

Drop it in the comments. I'm genuinely curious whether the treadmill is real or whether we're all just paying for FOMO.

If you want to try the flat-rate alternative I switched to: simplylouie.com — $2/month, 7-day free trial, 50% of revenue goes to animal rescue.
