Local AI 'needs to be the norm.' But not everyone has a $2,000 Mac.

The conversation is right. The solution is missing.

Hacker News is lighting up today with a simple argument: Local AI needs to be the norm.

I agree with the premise. Big Tech AI is:

  • $20/month with usage caps
  • Sending your prompts to corporate servers
  • Training on your conversations
  • Rate-limiting you when you need it most

But the proposed solution — run your own models locally — has a problem nobody in the thread is talking about.

Not everyone can afford the hardware.

The hardware tax nobody mentions

Running Llama 3 70B locally? You need:

  • Apple M4 Pro with 48GB unified memory → $3,500+
  • Or an NVIDIA RTX 4090 rig → $2,500+
  • Or a cloud GPU (which is... just paying someone else's server costs anyway)

For a developer in Nigeria, Kenya, or the Philippines, that's 1-3 years of salary for the hardware alone.

For a junior dev in Brazil or Indonesia, even the $20/month ChatGPT subscription is already 2-3 days of wages.

The "just run it locally" answer is a rich-country answer.

What I built instead

I wanted Claude-quality AI without:

  • $20/month subscriptions
  • A $2,000 Mac
  • My data being used for training
  • Surprise API bills

So I built SimplyLouie — a flat-rate Claude interface at $2/month.

No usage meters. No per-token billing. No surprise charges.

Just Claude, at a price that makes sense globally:

Country SimplyLouie ChatGPT
🇳🇬 Nigeria N3,200/month N32,000+/month
🇰🇪 Kenya KSh260/month KSh2,600+/month
🇮🇳 India Rs165/month Rs1,600+/month
🇵🇭 Philippines P112/month P1,120+/month
🇧🇷 Brazil R$10/month R$100+/month
🇮🇩 Indonesia Rp32,000/month Rp320,000+/month

The actual problem with Big Tech AI

The HN thread is focused on privacy and control. Those are valid concerns.

But for most of the world, the more immediate problem is price.

$20/month is the price of:

  • 3 days of groceries in Lagos
  • A week of transport costs in Nairobi
  • Half a week's wages for a fresh graduate in Manila

Local AI on expensive hardware doesn't solve that. It makes it worse.

Who SimplyLouie is for

If you're a developer who:

  • Can't justify $20/month for an AI tool on your income
  • Doesn't want to invest $2,000+ in local hardware
  • Wants Claude (not ChatGPT, not a watered-down free tier)
  • Wants flat-rate pricing with no billing surprises

Try SimplyLouie free for 7 days

No surprise bills. No usage anxiety. 50% of revenue goes to animal rescue.

On the local AI argument

I'm not against local AI. It's genuinely good for privacy.

But "local AI needs to be the norm" assumes everyone has the resources to run it. Most developers on Earth don't.

The real norm should be: affordable AI that doesn't extract from the people using it.

Local hardware is one path. Flat-rate $2/month is another.

Both beat $20/month Big Tech subscriptions with your data as the real product.

SimplyLouie is built by one person. $2/month, 7-day free trial, 50% to animal rescue. simplylouie.com
