I watched a team spend $150,000 a year on Claude Opus.
For classification tasks.
"Is this a bug, feature request, or complaint?"
Sonnet can do this perfectly. So can Haiku. But they defaulted to Opus because it "sounds better."
Nobody ran the numbers.
The Cost Reality
At 10,000 requests per day:
- Opus: $420/day = $153,300/year
- Sonnet: $110/day = $40,150/year
- Difference: $113,150 wasted per year
For what? 1% quality improvement they didn't even need.
When Does Opus Actually Win?
I tested Opus on 20 real tasks. It only outperformed Sonnet on:
- Multi-step research synthesis — Combining 5+ sources, finding contradictions, generating novel insights
- Complex code refactoring — Maintaining exact behavior while improving architecture
- High-stakes decisions — Where mistakes cost $1,000+
For everything else? Sonnet is "good enough."
The Hidden Cost
Nobody talks about this: Opus is slower.
- Opus: 12 seconds end-to-end
- Sonnet: 9 seconds
- Haiku: 4 seconds
If you need real-time responses (<10 seconds), Opus actually fails. You'd pick Sonnet anyway.
So you're paying 4x more for slower responses.
The Smart Strategy
Don't pick one model for everything.
Use escalation:
- Haiku (95% of requests) — Fast, cheap, straightforward tasks
- Sonnet (4% of requests) — Standard processing, production systems
- Opus (1% of requests) — Only when Sonnet hits a wall
Blended cost: $0.0014/request (vs $0.042 if all Opus)
That's 30x cheaper. Same capability where it matters.
The Real Question
Most teams don't ask: "What accuracy do we actually need?"
They ask: "Which model is best?"
These are different questions. The first is engineering. The second is marketing.
The answer to "best" is Opus. The answer to "most cost-effective" is Sonnet for 90% of your workload.
The Full Breakdown
I ran the actual numbers. Built cost models. Created a decision framework for when each model makes sense. Showed how to implement escalation.
All of this — with calculations, real examples, and the framework — is on my blog:
