That advice sounds reasonable—until you're a developer.
Your computer isn't the distraction.
Your computer is your workplace.
You need the browser to research documentation. You need GitHub, terminals, IDEs, databases, dashboards, communication tools, and dozens of other things.
So you can't simply remove every source of stimulation.
The better question is:
Why does my mind switch away from what I'm doing?
And once you understand that, there is another powerful idea:
Make distraction slightly harder to access.
Distraction Is a Pattern
Think about watching movies.
When you've watched enough movies, you start recognizing patterns.
You know when the mysterious character is probably important. You recognize the setup before the twist. You can sometimes predict what is going to happen next.

You don't need seventeen tools.
Friction Creates a Decision Point

Suppose Instagram is one tap away.

There is almost no opportunity to think.
Now uninstall it:

That extra effort creates a gap.

“Wait. Do I actually want this?”

This gives us a much better model for handling distraction.
1. Internal control
Understand the mental pattern.
Ask:
“What am I trying to escape?”
Identify:
- boredom
- uncertainty
- frustration
- fatigue
- anxiety
- lack of direction
Then choose what to do.
2. External control
Change the environment.
Ask:
“How can I make the unwanted behavior slightly harder?”

- move the console
- remove the shortcut
- log out

- keep distracting devices physically farther away

The first changes your response.

The bit about not turning it into a hunt for the right blocker is fair, and I say that as someone who builds productivity tools. Picking the app is a very comfortable way to not start.
I would move "Friction works in both directions" to the top. Taking friction out of coming back, like leaving the editor open on the line you stopped at, gets less attention than blocking things and probably matters more. The first minute back decides whether you stay.
