The Last Lesson

The cafรฉ was crowded that evening, but to me, the world had fallen completely silent.

An open mathematics book lay on the table in front of me, its pages blurred by the tears I could no longer hold back. I had cleared JEE Main, but JEE Advanced felt like a mountain I simply couldn't climb. No matter how hard I tried, mathematics refused to become my friend.

I was quietly crying when the gentleman at the next table stood up. He searched his pockets, checked his bag, then smiled awkwardly.

"I seem to have forgotten my wallet at home."

Without thinking twice, I paid his bill.

He looked at me for a moment, then glanced at the mathematics book lying open before me.

"Having a difficult time with math?" he asked gently.

I lowered my head without saying a word.

A warm smile crossed his face.

"You helped me today. Let me return the favor by teaching you mathematics."

The next day, he came back.

And the day after that.

Then every single day.

The little cafรฉ slowly transformed into our classroom. Equations were written beside coffee cups, diagrams were sketched on paper napkins, and every time I felt like giving up, he would quietly remind me,

"Mathematics isn't difficult. Fear is."

With each lesson, the questions didn't become easier.

I simply became stronger.

The subject I had once feared slowly became something I could understand, and eventually, something I could believe in.

Then came the examination.

Weeks later, the results were announced.

I had made it.

The first place I wanted to go wasn't home.

It was the cafรฉ.

I couldn't wait to tell him that I had finally done it.

But his chair was empty.

I waited.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Finally, a young woman walked toward me.

"Are you... the student my father used to teach here?"

I smiled.

"Yes. Where is Professor?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm his daughter."

She paused before speaking again.

"My father is no longer with us."

Everything around me suddenly felt distant.

I could barely whisper,

"But... he came here every day."

She nodded softly.

"He had been battling a serious illness for months. The doctors told him to rest. But every day, he insisted on coming here."

She looked at me and said,

"He used to tell us, 'There's a girl who's not losing to mathematics... she's losing to her fear. If I stop showing up, she might stop believing in herself.'"

My eyes drifted toward the empty table.

The untouched chair.

The coffee cups.

The pages filled with equations.

And the smile that had quietly carried me through my darkest days.

Only then did I understand.

He wasn't repaying a debt.

He was protecting a dream.

Some teachers educate through books.

Some teach through their lives.

And a rare few continue teaching even while carrying their own pain, simply because they cannot bear to watch a student give up on a dream.

That day, I didn't just clear an examination.

I carried forward the faith of a teacher who chose hope over his own suffering.

Some lessons end with the ringing of a bell.

The greatest ones stay with us for the rest of our lives.

Wow, I'm crying๐Ÿ˜ญ. If I weren't in a public place right now, I'd be sobbing out loud.

This year I cleared JEE Main, but I couldn't clear JEE Advanced. I'll be joining CSE soon.

Could you guide me on which skills I should focus on during my college years? If you were in my place, what skills would you prioritize?

By the way, your story really touched me. It genuinely made me emotional.

Every successful person can usually point to someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves. Thatโ€™s what makes great teachers unforgettable. Thank you for this beautiful reminder. โค๏ธ
