Foldable iPad Release Date: 2028 or 2029 Is Still Only a Rumor
Apple's long-rumored foldable iPad remains in development, but the device may be heading toward 2029 after engineering challenges complicated the company's earlier plans. Unlike Apple's recently expanded foldable-product rumors, this project has not been formally announced and remains dependent on technology Apple is still refining.
Current industry reporting places the device somewhere around 2028 or 2029 at the earliest. Reports describe a large OLED panel that could make the product function somewhere between an iPad and a MacBook when fully opened, but the final design has not been locked down.
The screen is the central challenge
A foldable tablet creates a problem that does not exist in the same way on smaller foldable phones: the panel is much larger, so every weakness in the display, hinge or supporting structure becomes more noticeable.
Reports have suggested a display in the 18-inch-to-20-inch range, although there is no confirmed size. A screen that large would give the device an enormous working area when unfolded, but it would also make the folded product thicker and potentially heavier than a conventional iPad.
Apple is reportedly trying to reduce those compromises while developing a hinge system that can withstand repeated folding without making the display crease too obvious. Those engineering questions appear to be among the reasons the product's timetable remains uncertain.
An iPad that could behave more like a Mac
The appeal of the concept is not simply a bigger tablet. A large foldable display could give Apple a portable computer that opens into a workspace much larger than a normal iPad while remaining compact enough to carry when folded.
That puts the project directly between Apple's existing product categories. A user could potentially use the folded device like a conventional tablet and open it when more screen space is needed. Reports have also described a possible MacBook-like experience, although Apple has not confirmed how the operating system would work.
Why 2029 keeps appearing in reports
The longer timetable is closely tied to the scale of the device. A foldable screen approaching laptop size puts more stress on the hinge and flexible display than a phone-sized foldable, while the larger battery and supporting structure can make the finished product difficult to carry.
Those trade-offs become especially important for Apple because the company already sells several devices covering the tablet and laptop categories. A foldable iPad would need to offer a clear reason to exist without simply becoming a very expensive MacBook with a different hinge.
That is why the reported development work matters more than any individual rumored specification. Apple appears to be exploring the form factor while continuing to work through the engineering and product-positioning questions that determine whether the project is ready for a commercial launch.
Price and timing remain unknown
The lack of an official announcement means almost every commercial detail remains unsettled. There is no confirmed product name, launch price, final display size or public release date.
Some industry estimates have placed the price above $2,500, but that figure is speculative and should not be treated as Apple's planned retail price. The more important development is the timetable: current reporting continues to point toward 2028 or 2029, with 2029 increasingly discussed as a realistic target.
If Apple eventually ships the device, the foldable iPad would represent a major expansion of the iPad concept rather than a simple screen-size upgrade. Until Apple announces the project itself, however, the technology and timing remain subject to change.
